The North Central Association (NCA) granted accreditation in March of 1986 after a team of representatives visited and observed the operation of Joan Treland and Associates. In its report, the NCA described the quality of the firm as "outstanding."

Joan Treland and Associates is an individually, locally-owned, directed clinical practice offering individualized help for educational needs. Treland emphasizes the personal approach to each student's needs. Communicating and coaching with parents is key, as well as direct communication with schools and liaison professionals: pediatric neurologists, child psychiatrists, clinical psychologists, ophthalmologists, audiologists, social workers, and speech and language pathologists.
This comprehensive educational service, established in 1971, is fully accredited as a special function school by the North Central Association for Colleges and Schools and offers a variety of services for students from preschool through college and adult. Special education and general education are the two major types of services.
Joan Treland has earned two special education degrees one in Learning Disabilities and one in Behavior Disorders. Additionally, she holds State of Illinois teaching certificates in Learning Disabilities, Behavior Disorders, Elementary, and High School (Special). She has had more than thirty years' experience in testing, teaching, therapeutic remediation, supervision, administration, and counseling. She specializes in working with individuals with dyslexia and other learning disabilities, as well as in motivational and organizational skills, and attention deficit disorders.
Treland has worked in public schools in both general and special education, has directed a private day-care nursery and kindergarten, and cofounded and directed a private school for students with learning disabilities and mild to moderate behavior disorders.
The mentor-tutors at Joan Treland and Associates are state certified and hold at least bachelor degrees in their subject areas. All have had extensive teaching experience and have outside interests in cultural, recreational, and scientific areas.
SPECIAL EDUCATION
Special education services include help for those with learning disabilities, Attention Deficit Disorder, behavior disorders, dyslexia, dyscalculia, specific language disabilities, verbal and non-verbal communication problems, auditory processing, and hyperactivity.
Interventions include diagnosis and evaluation, therapeutic remediation, consultation with parents and school, IEP preparation, treatment of school-related behavior and attitude problems, organization, study skills, and writing skills.
GENERAL EDUCATION
General education includes mentor-tutoring in honors, regular, and basic levels. Courses include English, writing, mathematics, sciences, social sciences, and foreign languages. Test-taking strategies, organizational skills, following directions, listening skills, motivational and attitude interventions, communication and critical thinking skills are all integral parts of mentor-tutoring sessions when appropriate.
Test preparation for ACT/SAT/PSAT/GED/GRE/GMAT/LSAT, high school entrance, and armed services is available.
